Building
Schools for the Future: where building design and
educational design converge
Over the
course of the next 10 to 15 years, secondary schools across
the country will be rebuilt or refurbished to the highest
standards of design, bringing about a transformation in young
people's educational experiences.
But will great buildings on
their own lead to higher educational standards?
It is envisaged that schools of
the future will neither look like the schools of today, nor
will the services they deliver stand comparison to current
secondary school practices. So what will a school look like in
the future, and how will the learning experience be different?
How will schools get from where they are today to where they
need to be, in order to achieve this vision?
Our job at
Edison Schools is to help schools and Local Authorities find
answers to these questions that best reflect the needs and
aspirations of their communities. Our work is guided by
a commitment to quality design that reflects best practice in
all aspects of education (including such essential aspects as
workforce remodelling, extended schools, the integration of
children's services and personalised learning). In common with
all good design, we concern ourselves equally with how these
elements work together to create a great school as to the
elements themselves.
On the
following pages you will find out more about the principles
drive our work. But how might these principles help you
to shape your vision for the future? Please contact us
and we will be pleased to arrange for you to meet with a
member of our BSF team for an exploratory discussion.
