Core Learning Skills - Questions and
Answers
Why have Core Learning Skills been built
into the Edison Design?
The Core Learning
Skills are part of the Edison Design because they impact on
raising achievement through developing skills for learning and
essential skills for life. This is in keeping with the new
Ofsted framework; the Primary and Key Stage 3 Strategy, and
Every Child Matters agenda
What about the 'Every Child Matters'
agenda?
The Edison Core
Learning Skill Curriculum provides materials, training and
support to schools in order for them to meet the outcomes for
ECM as evaluated by Ofsted.
How can we implement a Core Learning Skills
programme at our school?
Edison
provides training for teachers and materials which support the
implementation of the Core Learning Skills programme. They
consist of a framework of progressive 'I can' statements in
each area; a spiral curriculum model to support
implementation and Learning Units to provide teachers with an
easy means of engaging with what for many is a new way of
teaching.
How can teachers differentiate and provide
progression in the Core Learning Skills?
The Core Learning
Skills framework has been designed to support the use of
Learning Objectives for whole classes, groups and individuals.
Can Core Learning Skills support pupil
target setting?
Yes. Core Learning
Skill 'I can' statements can form targets for pupils in the
same way as academic targets.
Where did the Core Learning Skills
framework come from?
The Edison Core
Learning Skills have been drawn from the National Curriculum
- Key Skills; The Foundation Stage Curriculum - Early Learning
Goals; Thinking Skills; Social Competencies; Citizenship;
Emotional Intelligence; Every Child Matters; Primary and Key
Stage 3 Strategies; Learning to learn and social competencies.
What do you mean by 'intentional teaching
of Core Learning Skills'?
In order to be
conversant in the language of learning and aware of their own
learning capabilities and potential, it is important that
learners are explicitly taught the Core Learning
skills outside the context of the National Curriculum.
By doing this, learners build the capability and expertise to
practice and develop their learning skills in the course of
subject teaching.
What is the purpose of the Learning Units?
The Learning Units
provide medium-term plans, activities and tasks designed to
support teachers in the teaching of the Core Learning Skill in
the classroom. They have been designed to help schools
quickly develop their awareness and understanding of teaching
Core Learning Skills with the expectation, over time, each
school will personalise their curriculum to reflect their own
interests and context.
