Core Values

'Culture is about what we agree to be right and what we agree to be true. There is, however, a very important word in this definition: 'agree'.' - A Culture for Learning, Hay Group 2004

Edison's Design is underpinned by a set of core values to which all members of a school community can subscribe. By actively promoting and embracing these values, we provide a unique reference point that encourages a positive ethos and guides decision making by teachers and students alike.

We work with our partner schools to devise programmes that weave the core values into school life. The results can surprise and delight everyone: 'We are spending less time on behaviour, and students are learning what achievement feels like', and 'It's now cool to be kind to others' are typical comments from staff.

The work on core values meshes with other strands of the Design, so that they reinforce one another. In larger schools for example, the creation of 'schools within schools', each with its own mentoring and pastoral support staff, helps to develop a greater sense of community and identity.

Schools which adopt the core values use them as a touchstone in almost any activity, to help children become conscious of and adopt the positive ethical values promoted by the school. These form a framework both for their work and play in school, and for their lives at home and as citizens of the future.

'The code of conduct has had a big impact. It's become a mantra for the families too.' - Jane Gates, Headteacher, Lawford Meads Infant and Nursery School
