Integrated Core Skills Primary Curriculum - Questions
and Answers
What is an integrated curriculum?
The Integrated Core
Skills Primary
Curriculum links subjects to provide a broad and balanced
curriculum, with rich and exciting learning experiences for
primary pupils. The Learning Units within the curriculum
cover content objectives from a range of programmes of study
and provide comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum,
but presented to reinforce the links between subjects and
increase the relevance of learning contexts and opportunities.
How do we ensure breadth and balance in the
curriculum?
The Learning Units
provide for a rich and varied learning experience both in the
range and variety of activities and learning experiences
provided and in the balanced coverage of all National
Curriculum subjects. Not only can schools be confident
that they are fulfilling National Curriculum requirements when
using the Integrated Core Skills Primary Curriculum, by integrating the
development of Core Learning Skills into the curriculum, they
will also be building each learners capacity and capability to
engage with the curriculum.
Will Edison's Primary Curriculum deliver the National Curriculum?
The Key Stage 1 & 2
and Foundation Subjects have been mapped against the National
Curriculum in order to satisfy its legal requirements.
Suggested links for Literacy and Numeracy are also provided.
Is Literacy and Numeracy incorporated into
the curriculum?
Although links to
literacy and numeracy frameworks are included in the
curriculum, it is expected that school will wish to continue
to deliver literacy and numeracy as discrete subjects.
How will subject leaders monitor their
curriculum across the school?
The adoption of the
Integrated Primary Curriculum does present challenges for
subject coordinators and requires that new ways of working are
developed. Edison's Achievement Advisers provide
training, help and support to assist in this transition,
supported by extensive documentation for subject leaders.
We currently use QCA. Is your
Primary Curriculum for us?
Many primary schools
have found the QCA Units to be restrictive in their wish to
deliver an exciting and motivational curriculum. Edison staff
worked with practising teachers for over a year in order to
take a fresh look at how the curriculum can be delivered in
our schools.
Doesn't this mean a huge amount of planning
time for our teachers?
The curriculum is a
suggested framework to support teachers. It is not
prescriptive, and the ideas do not need to be slavishly
followed. However, the Integrate Learning Units provide medium
term plans from which teachers can draw their Short Term
Plans.
